OPTIMA - Water resources optimisation report for the Martil River, Morocco
This report presents the results of the water resources optimization conducted for the Martil River Basin.
The case study area covers the hydrographic drainage basin of the Martil River and a perimeter around the Tetuan city.
The water resources mobilized for drinking water supply of the Tetuan city and its coastal zone is currently ensured by water of the Nakhla and Smir dams, by pumping wells on the alluvial aquifer of Martil and Smir and by the pumping water from springs of the calcareous dorsal. The characteristics of the Martil river basin were input in a topology model using a Water Resource Model (WRM), which is used to assess the efficiency of the baseline model scenario. The specificity of the case is related to the water policy at national level concerning the security of drinking water in this region. All dams and treatments plants had been scheduled before. The optimization process takes into account this situation. The optimization scenarios were tested including instruments and constraints and a set of feasible solutions were derived. The report summarizes the main findings of the optimization runs. The alternatives scenarios will be helpful for decision making in terms of management of the system and others scenarios could be tested with evolution of decision makers involvement in optimization techniques and tools.
