SE.L.SY - Sea-Land System: concerted Actions for the Coastal Zone Management
The project aimed at designing an integrated approach to the environmental protection and management problems presented by the coastal strip (sea and land) of nearly 445 km long 3 Apulian provinces of Taranto, Brindisi and Lecce that intend to implement a plan for the safeguard of the Ionian-Salentina coast. This objective was reached by the development and installation of a floating platform with wireless applications to carry out real-time monitoring of water-quality along the coasts of the three provinces. In addition, a pilot wastewater treatment plant was constructed alongside the existing depuration plant and tests and analyses carried out suggested a viable alternative to chlorine products for the depuration of wastewater (H-peroxyde). A supporting information campaign and environmental studies were carried out on erosion & dunes problems. These contributed to the harmonisation, among the three provinces, of the areas planning tools.
