Meadows - Restoration of Latvian floodplains for EU priority species and habitats
The objective of this project is to initiate a coordinated nationwide programme for the restoration and long term management of these important floodplains. Thus, management plans are prepared for 15 sites in close consultation with stakeholders and urgent restoration works is undertaken on around 2400 ha of meadows. Since the long-term management is highly dependent on agricultural stakeholders, the project also promotes and trains farmers in applying for the new agri-environment schemes in Latvia. Over 400 farmers are contacted and study tours & educational seminars are organized to incite interest and active participation. Once achieved, the farmers are further assisted in the preparation of applications. The project not only ensures a coordinated and coherent approach to floodplain management but also provides capacity building:preparation of management plans, use of agri-environmental support or understanding conservation management needs of habitats in flooplains. In this context, the project uses its experiences to compile a comprehensive best practice manual on grassland management.
