OPTIMA - Problem analysis in the Lower Litani Basin, Lebanon
This report entails the comprehensive characterization of the Litani Lower watershed in terms of geomorphology, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, in addition to the water supply/ water demand interaction. The characteristics of the Litani Lower basin were input in a topology model using a Water Resource Model (WRM), which help assessing the efficiency of the baseline model scenario. The involvement of the various stakeholders and their contribution allowed the identification of the main key issues and constraints for the optimization process for the different scenarios of the Litani Lower Basin.
This report is sub-divided in 7 distinct sections. Section 2 presents the work methodology
adopted in the project. Section 3 presents a comprehensive characterization of the Lower Litani Basin in terms of physiography, meteorology, hydrology, and hydrogeology. Section 4 explains the estimation of the water demand/water supply issue from the Lower Litani Basin. Section 5 discusses the work package 5 (GIS) and its application in the Lebanese case study. The involvement of the stakeholders is discussed in Section 6. The application of the water
resources model and associated web-based models is exposed in Section 7. Section 8 presents the preliminary results related to set objectives, constraints for future scenarios for the Litani Lower Basin.
