DIFPOLMINE - Prevention of surface water pollution by mining activities
Start date of the project:
01/10/2002
End date of the project:
31/12/2006
Funding program:
LIFE - Environment
Contract Code:
LIFE02 ENV/F/000291
The project aimed demonstrating that a suitable approach to the management of polluted runoff water and the phytostabilisation of soil makes it possible to reduce the transfer of pollution from former mining sites to surface water.
It had several objectives:
- design and implement an appropriate water management system (i.e. devise a surface water collection network aimed at minimizing soil erosion and at directing the water to the proper channel depending on the level of residual contamination) for the area of Salsigne in France (Orbiel river);
- study and implement a plan for the final revegetation of surface areas by applying a phytostabilisation protocol;
- design and implement follow-up measures for the evaluation of this plan of action from the point of view of both concentrations and mass flow rates;
- study the transferability of the concept to the Gyöngyösoroszi site in the North of Hungary.
