Reservwet - Mediterranean reservoirs and wetlands. A demonstration of multiple - objective management in the island of Crete
The project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a multiple-objective reservoir planning and management in the island of Crete, to improve the efficiency and sustainability of current water uses and to add new wetland functions, maximising environmental and social benefits. To reach this objective the project conducted an assessment and evaluation of the existing economic, social and ecological functions of the Cretan reservoirs (creating a database); developed an integrated and multiple-criteria approach (designing a Decision Support Tool) for regional planning, concerning wetlands and water reservoirs, for the optimisation of reservoir site selection alternatives, as well as the biodiversity and the local human population; designed and assessed various pilot restoration measures in 6 selected reservoirs. Various dissemination and awareness raising efforts were also carried out.
