
Lubana wetlands - Management of the Lubana Wetland Complex, Latvia
The project aims to develop a coherent management system for the entire area in cooperation with the authorities & stakeholders concerned. Thus, 3 main priority management activities are applied: Practical habitat management measures, strengthening the overall management structure & public awareness raising. Under habitat management the removal of vegetation is implemented to stabilise the water regime, to restore 2 key sluices and 4 monitoring points for water level control and to create artificial islands for waterfowl in the fish ponds. With regard to overall management,establishment of an efficient management structure, involvement of all the stakeholders & efficient control over observation of nature protection regime is planned. Under the public awareness activities public meetings are organised for all the interest groups, to create field information station, information boards & to prepare regular information materials. As a result, 17 priority management measures were carried out and 4 new projects were prepared. Permanent water management, based on monitoring data are provided, ensuring favourable conditions.
