ELMAA - Integrated water management of Mediterranean phosphate mining and local agricultural systems
The ELMAA project aimed at the strategic need to reduce tensions on water resources (quantity and quality) by the phosphate mining industry at regional scale, e.g. in Morocco and Tunisia. It focussed on the interface between the mining and agricultural sectors, given the economic and social importance of the latter sector. Phosphate industry and water managers were provided with a methodology for the integrated management of water resources and provided with technological innovations to reduce the pressure on water resources in mining and agricultural practices. This methodology integrated a customised Decision Support System with a realistic representation of the water management system, integrating technical, economic, social and environmental dimensions.
