FLOOD-WISE - Improve cross border flood risk management in European river basins that cross national borders
Sustainable flood management strategies for cross border river basins European border regions regularly suffer from major floods, causing fatalities, displacement of people, great economic losses and large impact on nature. Floods often create cross border problems between countries, regions and institutions. It is widely recognised that effective flood management requires cooperation within the river basin. FLOOD-WISE realizes a real joint approach across (inter)national borders. FLOOD-WISE is an INTERREG IV C project in which water managers from various European countries exchange experiences with flood risk management. The objective of the project FLOOD-WISE is to improve cross border flood risk management in European river basins that cross national borders. And, they will transfer good practices between river basins, concerning the development of flood risk management plans and cross border cooperation. The good practices that will be identified during the project will be made available in the so called Water Information System for Europe; the database related to the EU water management directives. FLOOD-WISE will last for three years (2010 - 2012), during which the water managers will discuss and transfer flood risk management approaches in a cross border setting. Using staff exchanges, pilot projects, intervision meetings etc., good practices will be transferred and joint approaches in border regions will be developed.
Some 20 'Good Practices' are available on the project website.
