Maastricht water - Demonstration of integrated total water management for a cluster of 8 industries, implementing a centralised water supply and a semi collective WasteWater Treatment System
The aim of the project was to reduce the emissions produced by industry, to decrease the total amount of supplied and/or disposed water and to process the water in an environmentally responsible manner i.e. less chemical consumption, less sludge production, less energy consumption. The overall aim was to minimize the usage of valuable groundwater by industry. Achieved results included: reduction of groundwater use by circa 1.000.000 m³/y (done through internal optimisation measures and the substitution of groundwater by Maas water); reduction of industrial process water use by ± 500.000 m³/y; reduction of nitrate emission to surface water by 600 T N/y; use of nitrate for biological water treatment instead of O2; reduction in CO2 emission; reduction of energy consumption; reduction of chemicals use by exploiting C-sources from waste water.
