- 7. Drought in the Tisza River Basin
The Tisza River Basin runoff is highly variable – there are alternate periods of drought and flooding that are difficult to forecast and manage effectively. The droughts of recent years, such as the drought of August 2003, had severe effects in the region, particularly on the Hungarian Plain where agriculture was extremely affected. The lack of water reduces not only agricultural activity, but also the 64 of industry and urbanisation. Cities and other communities demand more water than the quantity available from rainfall, and it has always been difficult to get enough water for settlements far away from rivers. This section highlights the drought and drought management in the Tisza River Basin countries and signs of groundwater depletion. (8 Drought - p.118)
