The economic characterization of river basins according to Article 5 in the WFD mainly involves statistical uncertainty in view of the fact that economic and water use time series and monitoring data are often already available in many European countries, but not related to the same geographical unit, but instead collected and published separately at different administrative levels. Linking economic and emission or water abstraction data at the same spatial scale means furthermore that uncertainties and errors inherently found in the economic and water data may affect each other.
